Aquabella at Bayside Achieves LEED Platinum Certification
We are excited to announce that Aquabella at Bayside, the third phase in the Bayside community on the Toronto Waterfront, master-developed by Hines and Tridel, has achieved LEED Platinum Certification.
Along with our partners at Hines, we are honoured to receive this certification in recognition of our ongoing efforts to build greener, more sustainable communities where we can live, work, and play for generations to come. This marks a major milestone for Hines and us, as it is the third time that a condominium tower in the Bayside Community has received LEED Platinum Certification, following Aqualina and Aquavista.
What is LEED?
LEED, or Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, is the most widely used and internationally recognized rating system for evaluating the sustainability and green construction practices of commercial and residential buildings.
Buildings that receive LEED Certification are distinguished for their energy efficiency. On average, they consume an impressive 59% less natural gas and 33% less electricity. LEED-certified buildings also use 40% less drinking water.
How does LEED Certification work?
LEED certification is administered by the Green Building Certification Institute, which coordinates independent evaluations of qualifying sites to ensure the process is fair and transparent.
Qualifying buildings earn points when they demonstrate effectiveness in reducing carbon emissions, lowering energy and water consumption, improving waste management efficiency, employing green materials usage and transportation practices, and maintaining health and indoor environmental quality.
Buildings that receive LEED Certification are classified under four categories corresponding to the total number of points they earned during evaluation:
Certified (40-49 points)
Silver (50-59 points)
Gold (60-79 points)
Platinum (80+ points)
By earning more than 80 points during its LEED Certification process, Tridel’s Aquabella at Bayside was designated a Platinum building.
How we earned our LEED Certification
During the planning and construction of Aquabella at Bayside, together with Hines, we worked diligently with us to ensure that sustainability measures were always at the forefront of our activities. We used locally sourced and recycled construction materials that reduced unnecessary waste. Hines assisted us as we put plans into action that brought down drinkable water consumption by over 50% and avoided water waste by installing cisterns that sustain onsite gardens featuring climate-appropriate, drought-resistant plants. We even set up energy-efficient living spaces and electric vehicle charging ports so that residents of Aquabella at Bayside can keep the site environmentally friendly now that construction has finished.
During the evaluation process, Aquabella at Bayside was recognized for innovative reductions in water use and heat island effects, as well as exemplary green power and cleaning.
Built Green Built for Life
Our commitment to sustainability is central to our mission at Tridel. We believe that being green goes beyond caring about the environment. It is about ensuring that the communities we build are more efficient and provide more savings for our homeowners. It is about building homes that go beyond their stylish and enduring aesthetics to provide spaces that are healthy for people and the planet.
We promise that our communities are Built for Life. As Canada’s leader in green construction, we are always dedicated to implementing our award-winning business practices that have produced resilient, efficient, and environmentally responsible homes.
Compared to a Model Reference Building, a typical Tridel Built Green Built for Life community reduces Greenhouse Gas Emissions by 41%, while consuming, on average, 34% less electricity, 57% less natural gas, and 43% less drinkable water.
More than 20% of all high-rise LEED® projects in Ontario were built by Tridel, and we are thrilled Aquabella has been added to that list.
